Poker is one of the best known card games in the world period. Featuring in film, books, and even pop songs (thanks Ms Gaga) poker is now a phenomenon, thanks, at least in part to online poker spreading the doctrine.

According to our chums at wikipedia there is a degree of debate as to the origins of poker, and we’re not about to go into this now, but what is certain is that the game, mainly popularised in the USA, is now a global past time, and here at UK poker we like to think we contribute our little bit to the greater poker good too!

The ins and outs of poker is an extremely well blogged/written about subject, just do a search on google and you’ll see there are millions of websites dedicated to the game, many of which will go into far greater detail than is probably strictly necessary! So, just to get you started here, are the basics.

In essence there are 5 major types of poker, which largely follow similar rules, and in particular hand rankings. The devil, is of course in the detail, which we touch on just a little, in our guides; Texas Holdem (probably the most popular game of the modern era), Omaha, Omaha Hi Lo, 5 card stud and 7 card stud (which are also extremely popular, often in different parts of the world.)
